FED:Oil leak behind Qantas problem: ATSB=3

Mr Dolan paid tribute to the response of the aircraft crew.

"The aircraft would not have arrived safely in Singapore without the focused and effective
action of the flight crew," he said.

Mr Dolan said the investigation had so far identified the oil leak as a significant
safety issue directly relevant to what happened over Batam island.

That could be the sole cause, he said.

"Our investigation will still have some way to go before we can say that is the cause.

We will continue to look just to make sure we haven't missed something else," he said.

Mr Dolan said that problem could have been a one-off which only related to that particular
engine.

"But the results of inspections will tell us whether or not that is the case," he said.

Mr Dolan said it was unlikely that any standard maintenance procedure would have uncovered
this potential problem.

He said he was satisfied that all necessary safety action had been taken with the new
inspection regime and the upgraded software.
