SA: Man in court over state's largest pseudoephedrine seizure

ADELAIDE, Feb 10 AAP - A 31-year-old man appeared in court today charged with several
drug offences after the largest ever seizure of pseudoephedrine in South Australia.

George Katsambas (Katsambas) was arrested yhesterday after police raided an east suburban
Adelaide home and found 37 bags containing a total of 80kg of pseudoephedrine, used to
manufacture methylamphetamine or `speed'.

Also seized from the Blair Athol home were 1.4kg of methylamphetamine and 120gm of
purified methylamphetamine from a freezer, and $336,000 found in the ceiling, Adelaide
Magistrates Court was told today.

"That's the biggest quantity of pseudoephedrine located in this state," the prosecutor
told the court.

"My information is this quantity of pseudoephedrine would be enough to manufacture
at least 14kg of methylamphetamine which would be around $36 million in street value."

Katsambas' lawyer indicated Katsambas would plead not guilty to the charges of taking
part in the production of methylamphetamine, possessing methylamphetamine for the purpose
of selling it, possessing pseudoephedrine and engaging in a transaction involving tainted
property, namely possession of $336,000.

Katsambas was remanded in custody until next Friday, when he is expected to apply for bail.
